I have come up for air in what is best described as a Journey to Truth. For the last year, like many others, I have been challenged to Trust and Surrender. Big words. Wrapping my head around the words themselves necessitated letting go of my Expectations of what the words meant.
If you know me or have read any of my work or posts, you know that I have a deep connection to the natural world and that Nature has been my entry point, my teacher, mentor and classroom for my Journey. In the last year, she has called me to be with her in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Spain, the Amazon in Peru, cloud forest and archipelago of Panama and the Wild Atlantic coast of Ireland. She asked that I remove myself from the external distractions that suffocate the senses and bring my awareness to the internal distractions that consume my mind. To allow my Inner Voice to gain strength and momentum. In this space, where I began to differentiate what was inside and what was outside, I heard a request, practice Doing Nothing.
This wasn’t a request to meditate, for if you think about it, when meditating you are actually doing something: focusing on stillness, the body, breath and/or heart center. And it wasn’t a request solely for presence which implies awareness while in action. No, this was a request to Do Nothing.
So, I began. Sitting, maybe standing, and not occupying myself. Sometimes inside sometimes out. Just observing what was unfolding in and around me. Eating and moving when necessary, but bringing awareness to when it was not. Understandably, I found Doing Nothing to be challenging. The impulses to DO are strong. Our bodies and mind want to move. Plus, like many from the U.S. culture, I am highly productive and have an insatiable desire to fill my awake time with anything. If it is not clients, it is research, if not research, my to-do list, if not my to-do list, socializing, if not my friends, my phone, if not my phone, a movie, if not a movie, a meal or cleaning or hiking or problem solving or meditating. You get the picture. I am really good at filling my time. But, herein lies the problem. Doing things... doing... is a distraction from the pursuit of Truth.
Nothing takes us further from what IS than busyness. To just BE means taking time to really listen and observe what is taking place within. Who wants to pick up the phone? Turn on the t.v.? Go for a hike? Grab ANOTHER bite to eat? Wouldn’t a glass of wine be perfect right now! To just be is to ponder; What’s really behind the impulse? Does it need to happen? What if you Choose NOT to respond to the impulse? What if you do not respond to the mind and body’s desire to stay in motion? What if, instead, you just get curious about your World, about the impulses, motivations and habits? What if you get into True relation to You?
Doing Nothing does not mean a state of inertia - an impossibility - but what it is, is a heightened state of awareness of how one is acting verses being acted on. It’s a conscious state of Being, an opportunity to pause and observe ourselves. Listen to and understand the root and intentions of the internal chatter. Differentiate between Need and Habit, Thought and Belief, Emotion and Bodily Sensation as well as Heart and Soul. To witness who or what is running the Show that is Your Life.
In the vast sea of your Being, is your Truth ~ the Universal Truth. In Doing Nothing, you are actively seeking The Truth. Knowing, that every single thing that transpires in your Inner and Outer World is in fact a test of your Faith in The Truth.
I challenge you to begin a conscious practice of Doing Nothing. To seek out The Truth that is within. If you need to remove yourself from your Life to begin this practice, I highly encourage that as well. Trusting, from the core of your Being, that what you Seek, what you truly Need is within YOU.
