Whether you identify as spiritual or religious, unknowing or unbelieving, you are on a path. No one path is like another. Some souls come knowing exactly how they want to express in this lifetime. Others have passions or interests that bring them to their truth. There are clues along the way. Some are better at receiving clues, but this is just a practice to hone. Some seek clues through a myriad of experiences and adventures. Others are able to discover their truth through the seemingly ordinary experience of daily life. There are those that crave the comfort of directions. The pathways are infinite. What is universal is that our experience of Life is an outward journey towards our inner truth. It is a journey of self-discovery and remembrance, because we come into this life not fully remembering who we are or why we are here.
Of course, the journey is easier said than done. We are covered in layer upon layer of cultural conditioning, rules, expectations, beliefs, traumas and related negative or positive self-talk. Look around you and see the extremes of those who feel unworthy to be in the world verses those who are overconfident with who they are. Both ways of being obscure the truth and there is so much in between. The world is filled with how-to manuals, gurus and experts with prescriptions on how to be a better you. And each and every one of these are clues in and of themselves, nuggets of truth and wisdom. But what is important to know is that Your Truth is within You. And no other person or manual, regardless of what is offered, knows your Truth better than You. Everything you Need to Know is within You.
So, if everything you need to know is within you, how do recognize the clues and uncover your Truth? Practice using your senses. Sense subtle shifts, and sometimes not so subtle shifts in energy within and without. Notice signs from the natural and material worlds which often repeat themselves. Identify patterns or loops in your life. Is there a lesson you are just not getting? Who or what is calling your attention or crossing your path? What is being mirrored back to you? These are portals to remembrance.
Once you begin to pick up on the clues, attune to the true voice within. Separate it from the other channels, the cacophony of voices that permeate your being both inside and out. Your inner voice is clear, connected, loving and calm. It comes from deep inside of you. It does not lust, crave or desire. It does not fear or judge. It is not negative or positive. It just IS. Your true internal guidance system is a place of peace and tranquility. It is the voice that says, you are here now for a reason. It is an all knowing voice, timeless, existing simultaneously in your past, present and future. And it is often mistakenly ignored, subdued or replaced with the noise and chatter, the squeaky wheels, and their friends the voices of routine and habit who exist to keep you where you are. In the dark. Because, the voice of Truth, of light, diminishes their power. And without power, the voices concealing your Truth lose their ability to influence you.
We are all made of darkness and light. And every moment of every day we choose to be part of one or the other as captured so perfectly in this Cherokee legend:
There is a battle going on inside every human. Including you. It’s a battle of two wolves — a dark and a light wolf. The dark wolf represents envy, arrogance, anxiety, ego, inferiority, regret, greed, self-pity, guilt, false pride, fear, pain, anger, jealousy, rage; the light wolf represents love, peace, humility, kindness, serenity, generosity, trust, tranquility, compassion, empathy, joy, gratitude.
Which one wins?
Whichever one you feed.
(The Tale of the Two Wolves)
Imagine that one of your superpowers is the ability to see every individual as two people, their light and dark self. Choose someone you know who has triggered you of late. Now close your eyes and see them through your mind’s eye. See them as you would twins ~ one light and one dark. What traits of darkness do they embody? Which traits of the light? Now, make them whole again and see them as one who is struggling to exist in a world of light and dark. Now look at yourself. Split yourself into two and label your light and dark traits. No one is immune. This IS the human experience. No one can strip us of the darkness but the Divine. We can choose to acknowledge and face the darkness within ourselves. We can consciously choose to Be from the dark or from the light and we can choose how we react to the darkness and light in others. What we nourish grows.
Life is a series of endless tests of our Truth. As we move in the world as the best version of self, we strengthen our ability to be in the light verses in the dark. Our purpose is to bring awareness to our own individual struggle, clearing space for the inner voice to be heard. To be in alignment with our Truth. To be, as Gandhi said, the change you want to be in the world. In other words, You are Your Purpose.
